How to Find Custom Watercolor Wedding Invitations on Etsy

A detailed shot of a bespoke watercolor wedding invitation for a destination wedding in Italy laid on a red table.

As a lifelong paper product enthusiast, I knew the invitations for our wedding in Italy had to be special. I wanted a design that would set the tone for our three day celebration and something that didn’t look like everyone else’s.

While I fell in love with Shhmydarling’s bespoke designs, the cost wasn’t feasible (think $5,000k+). So, I pivoted to searching for custom watercolor venue illustrations on Etsy. This led me to a pivot: searching for custom watercolor venue illustrations on Etsy.

The Quick Answer:

On average, custom watercolor wedding invitations from Etsy cost between $10 and $15 per suite when utilizing digitized artwork and professional printing.

The Total Investment: What We Spent

After extensive browsing, I discovered Splendid Swan, whose art resonated with me and was more budget-friendly. Remember, most Etsy prices reflect design, not printing. Be mindful of artists who hand-paint each invite (rare & expensive) versus those who digitize their artwork for printing (like my invitations). My final cost per invite (including printing) was around $12.80.

I also opted for custom envelope addressing and wax seals which was an additional $70.

I want to warn that doing custom invitations is a splurge. I’m writing a guide to finding a more “budget-friendly” artist Etsy, but they are still expensive regardless (vs going with a site like Minted). In total, I spent about ~$350 just for 30 invitations. Also, don’t forget the cost of stamps on top of that!

I searched for hours to find the right artist, and I’m sharing some of my tips below for Etsy wedding invitations.

How to Find the Right Watercolor Artist on Etsy

Searching for the right artist took hours of digital digging. To save you the time, here is the framework I used to vet sellers and ensure the quality matched my vision.

1. Refine Your Search Terms

Don’t just search “wedding invites.” Use specific, long-tail keywords to filter out the noise:

  • “Custom watercolor wedding invitations”
  • “Hand-painted venue wedding invites”
  • “Bespoke floral wedding invitations”
  • “Trifold watercolor wedding invitation” (if you have a specific format in mind).

2. Vet the Artist’s Portfolio & Presence

Don’t stop at the primary product photos. Look deeper into the shop’s ecosystem:

  • The Portfolio: Does their style remain consistent across different venues? You want to ensure their “whimsy” or “realism” aligns with your aesthetic.
  • Communication: Don’t be afraid to contact the artist with questions about customization. How quickly do they respond to an initial inquiry? Are they professional?
  • Verified Reviews: Read the reviews specifically for “custom” orders to see how well the artist handled feedback and revisions.

3. Streamline the Creative Process

To get the best result from your Etsy artist, you need to be a good “client.” I recommend providing:

  • High-Quality Venue Photos: Send clear photos of your venue from multiple angles so they can capture the architectural charm accurately.
  • A Visual Mood Board: I sent a few examples of invitations that I loved to help the artist understand the “vibe” I was aiming for.

Important Logistics: Printing, Seals, and Ownership

Before you hit “purchase,” there are three things you must clarify in the fine print:

  • Printing Partnerships: Since most Etsy sellers are designers first, they often recommend a third-party printer (and sometimes offer a discount code). Factor these printing costs into your total.
  • Envelope Inclusions: Always double-check if envelopes are included or if you need to source high-quality paper stock separately to match the custom art.
  • Design Ownership: In most cases, the artist retains the rights to the design and can resell it. I personally didn’t mind this—you can actually see our invitations (with placeholder names) on our seller’s page now!

Choosing custom Etsy invitations is certainly a splurge compared to sites like Minted, but I loved having the invites be more personalized and show character!

Common Questions About Custom Etsy Invitations

How much do custom watercolor wedding invitations cost on Etsy? While prices vary by artist, you can expect to pay between $10 and $15 per invitation suite for a custom venue illustration that is digitized for professional printing. This typically includes the design fee and the cost of high-quality cardstock.

Do Etsy wedding invitations come already printed? It depends on the seller. Many high-end watercolor artists provide the digital design files only, and you must handle the printing through a third-party service. However, some artists (like Splendid Swan) offer full-service printing packages as an add-on.

Can I get a custom illustration of my specific wedding venue? Yes! Most watercolor artists on Etsy specialize in “Venue Portraits.” You will need to provide high-resolution photos of your location from multiple angles to help the artist capture the architectural details accurately.
