Spring Skiing in Lake Tahoe: Your Guide to Slopeside Style & Beyond

Crisp mountain air, the sun on your face, and spending all day outside on the slopes in Tahoe. I’ve spent plenty of winter weekends up here, and I can’t wait to squeeze in a few more spring sessions. If you’re like me, you want to ski hard but still bring a little style to the slopes.

Packing for Spring Skiing

Tahoe in spring means warmer temps, but don’t ditch those layers just yet! My go-to strategy:

  • Base Layer: The MVP Merino wool is your secret weapon. It keeps you warm and wicks away sweat. I always pack a few Smartwool tops and leggings.
  • Mid-Layer: Cozy is Key Fleece is always a classic, or a lightweight down vest for when it’s a bit chillier.
  • Waterproof: Your Shield Gore-Tex or similar tech is essential – wet gear ruins a good ski day fast.
  • Sunblock: Don’t forget the SPF, I also find I need to put it on my hands during the spring. With the warmer temps I end up taking my gloves off when waiting in the lift line, and I’ve gotten burned a couple times! Supergoop actually makes Handscreen.

Slope-Side Style

North Lake Tahoe leans more laid-back than some other ski towns (lookin’ at you Aspen). Here’s how to strike that balance:

  • One-Piece Wonder: Retro ski suits are back in a big way and I’ve had my eye on getting one! If you want to stand out, check out Cordova or Goldbergh for bold patterns and colors. This is the best time to snag one since tons of winter gear is on sale.
  • Sweater Weather: Knits over sleek ski pants are effortlessly chic.

The Total Tahoe Experience

  • Hitting the Slopes: Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows are our go-to mountains on the Ikon Pass.
  • Après-Ski: You can’t miss Sunnyside Lodge, which is one of our favorites hotels + restaurants. Grab a pitcher of their iconic “Gaper Guzzle” on the deck – the lake views are unreal. A few of our other favorites spots include Garwoods (for that classic Tahoe vibe) & Moe’s Original BBQ (when you’re craving comfort food).
  • Beyond the Slopes: Tahoe’s more than just skiing. Hike to a hidden waterfall (more summertime), snowshoe through the pines, or treat yourself to a natural hot spring soak.
  • Best Boot Shop: If you need to buy new boots or get your current ones adjusted/fitted – I recommend Olympic Bootworks. It’s where I got my pair from, they’re the best in the business (100+ 5 star reviews).

While comfort and technical performance are key for ski gear, there’s always room to express your personal style on the slopes. Here’s a breakdown of what’s trending and how to make it your own:

  • Color Explosion:  Gone are the days of all-black everything. Skiwear is embracing vibrant colors, eye-catching patterns, and playful color-blocking. Think hot pinks, electric blues, and retro-inspired neons. If head-to-toe bold isn’t your vibe, opt for a statement jacket paired with neutral pants or vice-versa.
  • Texture Play: Add visual interest by mixing textures. Look for faux-fur trims, fluffy fleece accents, and quilted fabrics. These details add warmth and a touch of luxury without sacrificing functionality.
  • Sustainable Style:  Eco-conscious fashion is here to stay, and skiwear is no exception.  Many brands now offer jackets and pants made from recycled materials, which is a win for the planet and your conscience. Look for companies that transparently outline their sustainable practices.
  • The Baggier Fit:  While skinny ski pants will always be a classic, looser, more relaxed silhouettes are gaining popularity. Think high-waisted pants with wider legs or even relaxed-fit bibs for a throwback look that’s surprisingly comfortable for long days on the mountain.
